Environmental Remediation: ecological management of water bodies

The environment and the nursery industry would benefit from methods to prevent release of excessive nutrients, pesticide residues, and sediments into non-target areas.  These components of runoff water often enter into irrigation water reservoirs and the natural water bodies in the vicinity.  Subsequent problems might include eutrophication, excessive sedimentation, loss of nutrients and leaching into the surrounding natural areas, or recycling of contaminants through irrigation water.

There is potential for using native plants, perhaps even ornamental taxa, for remediating the water in irrigation reservoirs and the soil surrounding the reservoirs.

The nursery industry is supportive of remediation efforts and many growers wish to be proactive in improving the quality of water at nurseries and in the surrounding natural areas.    [Sharma]

Retention ponds may become overgrown with algae or aquatic weeds due to excessive nutrients.
