Extension: Dr. Minogue provides
educational support to county extension faculty seeking solutions to
industry, private forest land owner, and government agency problems in
three general areas:
-
Sustainable forest management practices to protect and sustain
water quality
-
New silvicultural technologies to support use of tree crops to meet
society’s energy and other fiber needs
-
Forest vegetation management practices to enhance forest health,
restore habitats, and abate significant threats such as catastrophic
wildfire and invasive plant species
Research:
The forestry program at Quincy has been successful in obtaining
significant extramural funding to support research programs in the
general areas of the extension effort with a current focus on five
needs:
-
Evaluate the effectiveness of forest fertilization best management
practices (BMP’s) to protect surface and ground water quality
-
Develop cultural practices and genotypes for production of
short-rotation woody crops for cellulosic ethanol and other fuel
stocks
-
Determine effective integrated weed management practices for
significant invasive plant species
-
Explore the effectiveness of tree/forage cultural systems to
mitigate nitrate pollution from tertiary treated municipal waste
Develop alternative forest crops such as pine straw and short rotation
mulch production to sustain non-industrial private forest ownership. |
