Dear
Nursery/ABS Member/Bamboo Vendor/Bamboo Lover;
The
Chatham, Bryan, Effingham County Cooperative Extension Services are
combining programs with the SE Chapter of the American Bamboo Society
Meeting to provide an educational seminar called Growing Bamboo in
Georgia. This seminar is a two day event located at the Bamboo Farm
& Coastal Gardens in Savannah GA. The dates are Saturday and Sunday
February 17 & 18, 2001. There is a gigantic demand for bamboo from
homeowners but a severe lack of nurseries that grow bamboo. This
educational seminar is designed to instruct nurseries/and bamboo lovers on
how to grow bamboo. Enclosed is a copy of the agenda. As you can see, all
topics of bamboo growing will be covered.
The $20/person fee will include registration, a colored picture
publication called “Growing Bamboo in Georgia” (created for this
program), refreshments, and vendor source list. Registration for the first
person will be $30 after 01/26/01 and the Growing Bamboo in Georgia book
will be mailed. You will be able to meet vendors and purchase starter
plants. There is a $10 registration fee for each additional
family/business member to cover the costs of refreshments. You will meet
and interact with ABS (American Bamboo Society) members and make those
valuable contacts with the professionals which is so important in business
today. There will also be 3 hours of GA pesticide recertification credit
given.
The
La Quinta Inn (912) 925-9505 and International Guest House (912) 927-2999
(located very close to the Bamboo Farm) have special prices. Just mention
you are with the Bamboo Seminar. Please call David Linvill at (912)
652-7981 with any questions. Please register by 01/26/01 so that you will
receive a copy of the Growing Bamboo in Georgia book at the
meeting.
Sincerely,
David

Livestock/Forage
Update:
Options
for Small to Medium Ranches
The theme of this year’s Northwest Florida Beef Conference and Trade
Show is marketing and purchasing options for small to medium size ranches.
Many producers in the Southeast are interested in knowing what is
available for ranches that can’t sell truckload lots or purchase large
enough quantities for volume discounts. The Beef Conference will be held
on Thursday, February 15 with the trade show getting underway at 8:00 AM
at the Jackson County Agriculture Center (fair grounds) located 2 miles
west of Marianna on Highway 90. This is the day before the Winter Florida
Bull Test Sale at the North Florida Research and Education Center Beef
Unit.
Dr. Tim Marshall, University of Florida Animal Science Department, will
share his thoughts on the changing structure of cattle marketing and input
purchasing in the years ahead. Rodney Weatherly, Heritage Beef Company
will share a new program that his company has started for buying calves at
centralized locations. Heritage Beef provides carcass data and shared
profits on the calves they buy, but do not require truckload lots. A
representative from a rancher cooperative in Kentucky will share their
experiences with purchasing inputs as a group. They have experienced
18-40% discounts when buying inputs together. An Alabama Marketing Co-op
representative will be on-hand as well, to share how they have formed a
group sale that has benefited their members. Ed Neel, Chipley Livestock
Market will discuss the Livestock Market Association’s new LMA-Vacc
Program for marketing health value added calves. Dr. Bob Sand will
complete the program with a discussion and demonstration on bull selection
using the data from the Florida Bull Test. It is not the intent of this
program to promote any specific form of marketing or purchasing, but
simply to make producers aware of some new alternatives.
The Beef Conference is annual event sponsored by University of Florida
Extension Agents in the Panhandle of Florida and the Allied Industry Trade
Show Representatives. There are no fees for participants because the
exhibitor fees cover the cost of lunch as well as the speakers’ travel
expenses.
