Soon
after arrival in January, 2004 at the University of Florida NFREC, I took
charge of mitigating the wetland/retention pond at the Center. This area
will be utilised for demonstrating native, wetland plants to educate the
visitors. The first planting was initiated on 11 June 2004. We installed
the following species:
-
Iris virginiana
-
Crinum americanum
-
Osmunda regallis
-
Iris hexagona
-
Sagittaria lancifolia
-
Pontederia cordata
-
Hymenocallis rotata
-
Canna flaccida
-
Thalia dealbata
This is
an ongoing project and additional taxa will be planted as the project
continues.

The depressed area accumulates rain
water and also, some of the water running off of the nursery beds.
The images shown below were captured in February 2004.
 |
We
flagged the high-water-line in March and sprayed the area to prepare
for the upcoming planting. |
The
level of water fluctuates considerably as evident during a dry period
in late April. |
|
But
the month of June brought back the rain as we got ready to plant.
On 11 June 2004, we
started our first planting and installed several species
(see the list above).
We often see (and hear) wildlife in
the wetland and hope that more species of plants and animals will find
a home here...... |
