Brief Position Description

Primary effort on Peanut breeding and genetics with emphasis on variety development (University of Florida Project Leader). Other research includes variety testing (peanuts and grain sorghum) and various cooperative peanut studies with other scientists (pathology, entomology, nematology).

Accomplishments

  • Primary or co-developer of 21 peanut cultivars in the U.S. Early Bunch, Sunrunner, Southern Runner, Marc I, Andru 93, SunOleic® 95R*, SunOleic® 97R, Florida MDR 98, C-99R, ANorden, Hull, Carver, Andru II, GP-1, DP-1, AP-3, McCloud, York, Fla-07, AP-4, Florida Fancy, one in Bolivia (Mairana) and four in Australia (Menzies, Holt, Deakin, and Forde).
  • Identified and reported first non-nodulating peanut in world (Agronomy Journal), developed and released first late leafspot/multiple disease resistant cultivar in U.S. (Southern Runner) and co-developer of first high oleic peanut cultivar in the world (SunOleic 95R).
  • Co-inventor of three utility patents on high oleic peanuts and their products.
  • Past President and Fellow of American Peanut Research and Education Society, with numerous other positions with APRES, including technical program chair twice.
  • Past representative for APRES on Council of Agricultural Science and Technology Board of Directors (CAST) (Associate Editor).
  • Member and past Vice-Chair of Peanut Crop Germplasm Committee, formerly Crop Advisory Committee (USDA advisory on germplasm).
  • International involvement on peanuts in Australia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Barbuda, Puerto Rico, Bolivia, St. Kitts, Bolivia (USAID Peanut CRSP project leader), Argentina; consultant in South Africa, Australia, Argentina.
  • Coordinated and gave presentations at 35 annual Peanut Field Days at NFREC, Marianna (200+in attendance), presentations on peanut varieties at 26 Florida Panhandle Peanut Short Courses, with numerous other invited presentations (local, regional, national, international), including five University of Florida AP press releases on peanuts.
  • Author or co-author on over 600 publications, mostly on peanuts.
