Research Activities
Dr. Barnett is conducting Plant Breeding programs with the following crops: wheat, rye, oats, and triticale. The goals of the small grain breeding program are two-fold. The first is to develop more productive, disease resistant cultivars that fit into multiple-cropping, minimum tillage systems. The objective is to produce more grain per acre economically while utilizing less energy. We are trying to develop cultivars that are resistant to disease, insects and lodging, that are higher yielding, better in quality, and earlier maturing. The second goal is to develop small grain cultivars that provide forage and pasture during the late fall and early winter when perennial species are dormant.
