Research and Extension Initiatives:

I have emphasized a research program based on excellence in the form of quality research, multidisciplinary interactions and a need for practical results.  My research program can be defined by three focus areas:

      1) To develop reliable, efficient, and economic artificial insemination protocols.

      2) To evaluate the practical use of applied reproductive technologies.

      3) To develop and maintain collaborative relationships and research that focuses on factors affecting reproduction in cattle.

The defining area from which all of my programs have emerged has been the notoriety we have achieved in the area of estrous synchronization, specifically our publications related to fixed-time AI (which have become the standard of our industry).  The primary reason U.S. beef producers cite for the lack of widespread AI use to breed heifers and cows is limited time and labor.  Development and methods of implementation of fixed-time AI protocols are essential for producers, because they reduce the “hassle” factors associated with estrous synchronization and AI.  Our integrated approach should encourage the use of this technology by U.S. beef cattle producers.

The impact of my research program is three-fold: 1) generating reliable hypothesis based research with collaborative efforts that enhances the understanding of major physiological interactions; 2) obtaining results that can be used by producers, which improves economic and production standards of beef operations; and, 3) Increasing the percent of operations that utilize assisted reproductive technologies to improve genetics in beef cattle.
