Cotton is a major cash crop of the rotation system. However, the Florida statewide average yield of 650 lb/acre of lint cotton does not provide much income for a lot of growers. As with peanuts, we expect a 50 to 100 percent increase in yield after bahiagrass, and there is considerable scientific literature that supports their findings. The major factors in this increased in yield is due to a reduction in plant pathogenic nematodes and an increase in root depth of the cotton plants. There is also the potential added benefits from increase organic matter in the soil. Specific studies will address these questions.
