Peanut Breeding and
Genetics
(FLA-QUN-04155)
Cultivar Development
The peanut breeding
program is focused on developing cultivars with improved yield, grade,
disease resistance, nematode resistance, and grain chemistry. The primary
goal is to produce cultivars that deliver greater profits for peanut
producers.
Improving Efficiency in
Plant Breeding
Plant breeding programs
such as the UF peanut breeding program are costly in terms of human,
financial, and capital resources. A single cultivar may require 8-15
years to develop and commercialize. Improving both the speed and
accuracy of cultivar development is important because it reduces costs and
product introduction time.
